Training Notebook: Tight Spaces

Training Notebook: Atlanta United preparing for New York City FC was the main focus at Wednesday’s practice

It’s that time of year.Ā The trees areĀ changing colors – red, yellow, orange.Ā The air is crisp.Ā Ā

TimeĀ for the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs.Ā

It wasĀ clear at Atlanta United’s training session on WednesdayĀ that’s what the team was training for.Ā We saw intense drills, fierce competition, players who have been sitting out return, and, in perhaps the biggestĀ mediaĀ turnout since head coachĀ Gonzalo Pineda’s first practice,Ā a stand that can hold multiple microphones.Ā

Pineda’s design for theĀ 14Ā days in between matches,Ā as he explained last week,Ā was aĀ two-parter: last week, the team spent time working on self-improvementsĀ like faster play and finishing drills. This week, the teamĀ isĀ makingĀ specific preparations forĀ Sunday’s matchup.Ā Ā

ā€œIt’s going to be important that we show up ready to play because I know New York City is certainly going to bring it, and if we want to do something special in a short amount of time, we have to make sure we come prepared for Sunday,ā€ goalkeeperĀ Brad GuzanĀ said after practice.Ā

Atlanta UnitedĀ participated inĀ their regularĀ keep awayĀ andĀ cascaritasĀ games.Ā During the middle part of practice, the teamĀ broke off and competed in a high-paced passing drillĀ that split players on either side of two halves.Ā The team had to move the ball quickly up-and-down the field, seeing what passing lanes were available in tight spaces.Ā PinedaĀ andĀ assistant coachĀ Rob ValentinoĀ were very vocal, giving constant instruction. When a team scored or the ball went out of bounds, Pineda played a new ball in rapidly to keep the players going.Ā Ā

In theĀ cascaritasĀ games that concluded practice, the fast play continued.Ā The teamĀ dividedĀ into four and scrimmaged againstĀ oneĀ another.Ā At one point,Ā strikerĀ Josef MartĆnez, on the orange team,Ā shoutedĀ forĀ his scrimmageĀ teammate to come on and meet his pass. In a nice combination for the blue team, defenderĀ Miles RobinsonĀ passed out wide toĀ strikerĀ JakeĀ Mulraney, who then passed it back centrally toĀ midfielderĀ Franco Ibarra. Ibarra found a lane up the middle toĀ strikerĀ Luiz AraĆŗjoĀ right near theĀ goalĀ line. The striker tried toĀ toe the ballĀ into goal, butĀ goalkeeperĀ BenĀ LundgaardĀ timed it well and blocked the shot.Ā

ā€œIt’s ā€˜do-or-die’ situation,ā€ defenderĀ Brooks LennonĀ said. ā€œEvery single 90 minutes that you’re going to play from here on out, you’ve got to give everything you have in your body every single second of the game because every play matters.Ā SoĀ we’re really excited for Sunday. And I think the guys are prepared.ā€Ā

Here are a few more insights and observations from theĀ Children’s Healthcare of AtlantaĀ Training Ground on Wednesday.Ā Ā

VamosĀ

Pineda wasn’t available to speak to media on Wednesday, butĀ his presence was felt in a big way. He was extremely vocal during training, giving instructions in a blend of Spanish and English. He told his team to play faster (ā€œVamos!ā€ ā€œRĆ”pido!ā€) and encouraged them not to think too much and just play.Ā

ā€œLook over your shoulder, where’sĀ the goal?ā€ heĀ called outĀ to help his players understand where they were on the field.Ā

Atlanta’s head coach knows what it means toĀ playĀ inĀ big moments.Ā HeĀ was a member ofĀ Mexico’s national team that competed inĀ the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.Ā DuringĀ his timeĀ as an assistant coachĀ in Seattle, the SoundersĀ made three MLS Cup Finals appearances in four seasons and won the Cup in 2019.Ā Ā

ā€œIt shows you what kind of competitor he is, what his desire is to win and be on a winning team,ā€ Guzan said. ā€œAnd I think he’s been able to pass that message along to us.ā€Ā Ā

Pineda’sĀ MLSĀ experienceĀ helps Atlanta United in itsĀ fourth-everĀ berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs.Ā Not only did he learn a lot from his mentor,Ā SoundersĀ head coach BrianĀ Schmetzer, butĀ theĀ experienceĀ in Seattle taught him the nuances of MLS, physicality of playing intense matchups and mental strength it takes toĀ compete in high stakes environments.Ā

ā€œI think what Gonzalo has brought to the group is the ability to get the best out of individualĀ guysĀ and understand that what works for this guy may not work for that guy andĀ vice versa, andĀ being able toĀ maximizeĀ the skills and the talent in our group," Guzan said.Ā

Described as ā€œa player’s manager,ā€Ā GuzanĀ andĀ LennonĀ bothĀ credited their headĀ coach with his influence on the team’s culture. Lennon spoke on how PinedaĀ has learnedĀ aboutĀ everyone’s motivationsĀ andĀ gets to know each of his players on a personal level.Ā Ā

ā€œJust his communication, on and off the field,Ā hasĀ really gained confidenceĀ inĀ his side,ā€ Lennon said.Ā

An important component for Pineda is having ValentinoĀ on the bench with him. Like Pineda, Valentino has aĀ personableĀ relationship to his players. He’s been an important part of Atlanta United making it to this point, guiding the team to a four-game winning streak as interim head coachĀ earlier this season, and on Tuesday the clubĀ rewarded him withĀ a contract extension.Ā Ā Ā

Pineda and Valentino, both have that ā€œplayers firstā€ mentality.Ā And,Ā as the passing drills showed today, they'reĀ working hard to make sure their guysĀ stayĀ sharp for the biggest stage.Ā

ā€œThe margins are so fine in the playoffs, there’s no tomorrow,ā€ Guzan said. ā€œIt’s about making sure you do the business on the day.ā€Ā

Yankee StadiumĀ

Some ofĀ theĀ pointsĀ the teamĀ worked on includedĀ preparing to play at Yankee Stadium, where NYCFC will host AtlantaĀ UnitedĀ on Sunday.Ā The pitch isĀ narrow, measuring atĀ 110x70 yards, making it the smallest in MLS. It’sĀ home to the New YorkĀ Yankees.Ā Ā

ā€œThat stadium was not meant for soccer games,ā€ Guzan said.Ā Ā

The smaller field gives it aĀ differentĀ feelĀ than Atlanta United’s home, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and theĀ dimensionsĀ make it important for players to be able to play in tight spaces.Ā To get used to the different feel, the team made some tweaksĀ to itsĀ training. It mappedĀ out a narrower shape onto the practice field at the Training Ground.Ā The ability for both attackers to move the ball quickly, and for defenders to be prepared for the pace of play,Ā wasĀ a central focus.Ā Ā

ā€œNew York City FC is a really good team,ā€ Lennon said. ā€œThey are good in tight areas, so we’ve been preparing for that.ā€Ā

NYCFC has spent some of their season in New Jersey, splittingĀ time atĀ Red Bull Arena with the New York Red Bulls. However, NYCFC has been successfulĀ whenĀ itsĀ played atĀ Yankee StadiumĀ in 2021. TheĀ clubĀ has gone 6-1-2 in nine matches at Yankee Stadium, which helpedĀ itĀ secureĀ that No. 4 spot in the Eastern Conference standings.Ā

ā€œWe can’t use it as an excuse,ā€ Guzan said. ā€œWe’ve got to be ready for a dog fight, whether it be in Yankee Stadium or wherever.ā€Ā

Three Bonuses

SeveralĀ playersĀ wereĀ back at training on Wednesday, including two midfielders who have been dealing with injuries off-and-on over theĀ lastĀ fewĀ weeks.Ā Marcelino MorenoĀ andĀ Santiago SosaĀ appeared to be playingĀ atĀ full strength without limitations.Ā Ā Ā

ā€œTo have them back on the field is certainly a bonus for us,ā€ Guzan said.Ā

AlsoĀ onĀ the pitch was Robinson.Ā The defender returnedĀ toĀ Atlanta after spending the last week with the U.S. men’s national teamĀ asĀ itĀ looksĀ to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.Ā Ā

TheĀ international experience is helpingĀ Robinson’s game developĀ into an elite defender.Ā TheĀ 24-year-oldĀ wasĀ namedĀ one of three finalistsĀ for Defender of the YearĀ in the 2021 MLS Year-End Awards.Ā

ā€œI think over the last six months or so the thing that’s impressed me the most is his distribution and being able to play out of the back,ā€ Guzan said. ā€œI think he’s certainly grown into his own type of player, his own style of being a center back. It’s great from a teammate perspective to see where he started and to see where he is now.ā€Ā

RobinsonĀ played 89 minutesĀ inĀ USA’s 2-0 victoryĀ over MexicoĀ before receiving his second yellow card. The penalty made himĀ unavailable for the national team’s match against Jamaica on Tuesday.Ā Ā

Although his early exit from theĀ NovemberĀ World Cup qualifiers wasĀ frustrating,Ā the penaltyĀ was aĀ littleĀ fortuitousĀ for Atlanta United. The teamĀ wasĀ happy toĀ getĀ one of their best defendersĀ back a little earlier than expectedĀ aheadĀ of a huge game on Sunday.Ā

ā€œWe’re obviously extremely excited for him on an individual level, but also as a team level to have him back in preparing for a huge game Sunday,ā€ Guzan said.Ā

For The CityĀ

A season full of ups and downs. New acquisitions. A strong belief. An experienced skipper at the helm.Ā Ā

Some might describeĀ Atlanta United’s run that way, butĀ it could also refer toĀ another Atlanta sports team. OneĀ that’s coming off an improbable postseason run and winning the franchise’s first championship in 26 years.Ā

The Atlanta Braves.Ā

As Atlanta continues to celebrate theĀ Braves’ World Series win,Ā Atlanta UnitedĀ players areĀ drawing inspirationĀ from their brothersĀ just a few miles down I-75.Ā

ā€œThey were kind of the underdog going into the World Series, andĀ it’sĀ great to see the Braves come out on top, and we’ve definitely gained some confidenceĀ just by watchingĀ them,ā€ Lennon said.Ā

Many Atlanta United players followed the Braves postseason run. MartĆnez made an appearance atĀ TruistĀ ParkĀ during the Braves series against theĀ Los AngelesĀ Dodgers. Several other players, includingĀ Alex DeĀ John,Ā rootedĀ for theĀ BravesĀ and followed them along their run.Ā

The 2021Ā season so far forĀ Atlanta UnitedĀ hasĀ sharedĀ a lot of similaritiesĀ with the 2021 Braves. BothĀ teams hadĀ to overcome adversity during their regular seasons. BothĀ showedĀ their best form late in the season.Ā

And, of course, bothĀ playĀ to make their city proud.Ā

ā€œIt’s great to see the city of Atlanta get behind a sports team like that,ā€ Lennon said. ā€œSoĀ we’re hoping the city gets behind us on Sunday and pushes us to get a result.ā€Ā
